A magazine and book illustrator and printmaker, the artist Hatsuyama Shigeru created a number of woodblock prints featuring children at play (see below images), including this charming image of five children gathered around a hearth. The artist uses blue ai pigment (a deep indigo color) as the background and gives us several perspectives at once. As with all of Hatsuyama's children prints the rendering of the children captures the mischievous, innocent and serious aspects of their nature.
